JEFFERSON COUNTY

JEFFERSON COUNTY

Known at the "Keystone County" Jefferson County is the only county that extends from Georgia on the north to the Gulf of Mexico on the south.  In contrast to most of the Nature Coast it experiences the four distinct seasons.

The northern two-thirds of the county (the Northern Highlands) is where most of the crop and livestock farming occurs.  The southern one-third (the Coastal Lowlands) is flat with poorly drained sands and used mostly for commercial timber production. There are about eight miles of coastline.

Thousands of wooded acres and rolling hills with ponds and lakes cover the area. Three major rivers, the Wacissa, Aucilla and St. Marks traverse miles of pristine forest and marshlands.

Majestic plantations and homes listed on the National Historic Register exhibit ante-bellum and Victorian architecture.  The Monticello Historic District and the Lloyd Historic District attract history buffs along with the many forts located in the county.  Jefferson County is one of the only counties remaining in Florida with no stoplights.

Activities play an important  role here.  The Watermelon Festival, the 100 year old Field Trials, and a greyhound dog-racing track are well known events in community life.
