GOETHE STATE FOREST

53,398 ACRES

Purchased from Mr. J. T. Goethe in 1992 the Goethe State Forest may contain the largest tract of contiguous, old-growth longleaf pine flatwoods in the state of Florida.  Many different natural communities exist in the forest including scrubby flatwoods, dome swamp, sandhill, and basin swamp.  It is also home to several rare animal species including the Florida black bear, gopher tortoise, and Sherman's fox squirrel.  Birdwatchers may spy the bald eagle or the red-cockaded woodpecker (since this forest has one of the largest populations in the state).

Three separate trailheads provide easy access to the Goethe Trail System extending throughout the forest.  All three trailheads (Black Prong Trailhead, Apex Trailhead and Tidewater Trailhead) are located off CR 337.  Activities include picnicking, hiking, wildlife viewing, bicycling, fishing and horseback riding.

Regulated hunting and fishing, under the direction of the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, is allowed.  Please check for season dates.
